The need of today’s interiors

  1. Project description

It becomes more certain that the architecture defines the most the structure and the history of any culture,  a world today  that abstraction seems to influence everything that belongs. What happens nowadays is like a withering of the material, all is leaning to the virtual, immaterial, a sewage spirit, of reduction to the essentials of the macro to micro, from the object to its synthesis.

My project focuses on elucidating these thoughts in a public space, a space that is artistically designed, abstractly thought, and architecturally considered.

Indeed my study question could be formulated as follows: What is the contribution of artistic practice in the awareness of our cultural era in the development of “new” conceptions of space? In other words how to make architecture a medium of an artistic work that seeks to exceed its functionality to get its spiritual dimensions.

This is why I have chosen as the starting point of my research abstract art and philosophy of Kandinsky. This project has given the vocation to wield two disciplines: abstract art of Kandinsky and interior architecture to design a space that will be a body of work that explores and expresses the world we live.

  1. The contextual framework of research

Kandinsky in his book “The Spiritual in Art” is far from a simple categorization of creative work, the painter there spreads a profound reflection on the importance of development of the human soul by artistic means and the spiritual renewal through the synthesis of all the arts. That’s where I got the idea to dig into the complementary of artistic disciplines and merge visual art and applied art, two environments that can not be separated, it within our era.

Our time is elusive, its complexity and controversy make the task of defining it even harder, reproduce in writing the current lifestyle looks like wanting to take water from a waterfall with hands, we will be that splashed with a few drops, drops that will eventually become some facets of this daily, a daily invaded by technology and tends to shortcuts, to the virtual.

Now we are faced to a daily where abstraction seems to influence all which makes part of, corporeality and entities give way to the essence of things. Our penchant for digital technology is increasing day by day. And therefore new visions and new designs were introduced, the creative and cultural consumption products have now become one important pillar of development.

  1. The conceptual framework of research

“The need of today’s interiors” is a project that leans on the awareness of today profile and the importance of the impact of the architectural space in our sensory perception.

Choosing Kandinsky’s art and philosophy was inevitable, due the presence of both architectural and spiritual aspect in his research, by architectural I mean his study of the canvas as a plan and the lines, the curves, the heaviness and more details that this plane can embodied.

Our approach is divided into two major parts: ▪ Reading the approach of Kandinsky about the shape and color. ▪ The establishment of relations between the architectural and the pictorial elements according to Kandinsky.

By resuming the two books of Kandinsky,I have build the pillar of the space:

–Point and line in plane: mostly about the surface and the significance of the nature of lines, how the space has to be divided according to a kind of resonance.

–Concerning the spiritual in art: mostly about the color and its container, the shape.

The shaping of the space has become clear to establish, by dividing it as follow:

the sonority of the 4 sides

Dividing the space density into four parts, the schema shows the resonance of each side and how the other elements has to be placed according to this scenario.

entry and disposal of fixed points

On this schema I identified service points, taking into account the input and for what will be a top attraction for visitors.

The entrance can be condensed expression of a space, to admit an exuberance and even a hint of attraction also consider putting the broken lines that attribute to accentuate the dynamism of space.

dynamism of the broken line

Now, he both sides (left, right) must treated both sides in terms of linear construction, and refrain for the top and promote the  void:

▪ Right Side:

linear arrangement of the right side

The straight lines and diagonals are best suited for the composition of  right side given to their sonority that firstly  creates an attached connection with the plane thus density this side.

▪ The left side:

linear arrangement of the left side

The lines that gravitate on a point, shape different forms that  carry different sensations and feelings to better understand space in this side.

In this stage, I have established the architectural elements and aspect that I’ll be working with later.

Now  comes the question of the color contribution to my arrangement, this arrangement has to be treated according to each side:

▪ Right: foster warm and bright colors (orange, yellow)

▪ Left: foster cool tones (blue, green)

▪ Top: promote violet tones.

That said, the shapes, lines, colors, patterns, dimension, lighting all these elements can contribute to the semantics of architecture, except that this “typology of creation” does not claim to be nor  exhaustive or dogmatic, however it reveals the elements of an architectural work composed wit significant units, flexible and combinatorial, that build the significance of this work and on  which carries my approach.

Establishment of the conceptual analysis into a functional plan

In order to concrete my analysis, and link the elements said before in a architectural space, I’ve chosen a functional plane which is a coffee library.

-service locations:

research of the toilet shape

the counter shape

-Plan:

In this stage I’ve worked with the collage technique, I want to vanish the barrier between a plan and a canvas, after all this project is about circulating in a 3 dimension canvas, with all the metaphoric and real interactions.

plane collage research

-Research according to the four directions:

▪ The up: inspired from a painting by Kandinsky.

Collage research for the up

Elaborated research for the top.

▪ bottom : Once I’ve defined the shape of the top, I was focused on the location of the columns and their dual function poles and shelves holder for books.

As for the toilet and counter their places were already identified in the plan.

Collage of the final shape of the columns

Sketches for the left culumns

The final skeleton of the space

-The elements of the space:

After getting the skeleton of our space, comes the question of  creating the elements of all this space : chairs, benches and tables.

  1. Space analysis

The coffee area is not resigned only on the functions of it, but also the inner values that contain its elements. The architectural element becomes semiotic signs to interpret, that allows the visitor to confront a variety of emotions. Line, shape, color, are placed so as to highlight their resonances.

The sides are arranged according to their function and  the most suitable the atmosphere for each one , I’ve separated the two sides in a manner that distinguished the difference between the two using colors. I’ve assigned to the right side the colors of momentum and energy while to the left, I’ve have chosen colors that promote reflection and calm.

The entire structure consists of a space which is divided according to the various functional and spiritual claims, this division is extracted from the color and shape by the use of light and also the heights of our mezzanine, all this to create a dynamic space, relative to the environment in a active way, in the sense of evolution and adaptation of the user to the surrounding context.
